About Sontale Mastering

Meet Your Mastering Engineer

I'm here to help you.

Finding a great mastering engineer can be difficult. It's rare to find someone who meets the highest standards in sound quality, professionalism, and personal values. I want to change that.

I founded Sontale Mastering in 2023 with one singular mission: to help artists reach their full potential and release the best possible sounding version of their music. Drawing on my 25 years of industry experience as a music producer and mastering engineer, I combine comprehensive technical expertise and a passion for music to provide a pristine mastering service and a first-class customer experience.

Behind the Scenes

The heart of the studio is an analog desk that imparts unparalleled depth and warmth to any signal — tubes and transformers that breathe life into your music. A precise monitoring system reveals the overarching feel and subtle nuances of your song, while digital processing adds surgical precision and restoration. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Let me answer your questions.

What is mastering and why is it important?

Mastering is a crucial step in the music-making process. It's a quality check that identifies and fixes issues like unwanted clipping, clicks, or pops. It uses audio processing — EQ, mid-side processing, and limiting with digital and analog equipment — to enhance your song, and it can offer valuable mix feedback through critical listening.

Mastering also manages loudness to the desired level for your style without sacrificing quality, and delivers your music in any format you need — digital, ADM (Apple Digital Masters), CD, vinyl, or cassette tape — so it translates well across every listening environment.

How do I prepare my mix for mastering?

Most importantly, you should be satisfied with how your mix sounds before sending it off for mastering. Ensure the highest peak-level is -3dB or lower before exporting, and remove any limiters on your stereo bus — the overall volume should sound lower, as this is adjusted during mastering. Export a .wav or .aif file at the same sample-rate as your mix project, preferably with 24 or 32 bit depth.

How do I submit my files?

Use the file sharing service of your own choice, e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive or WeTransfer, to upload your files. Once uploaded, include the link when you book your mastering right here. Afterwards, I will reach out to schedule a date for mastering.

How long will it take for my tracks to be mastered?

The time required depends on the number of songs, as more tracks naturally take longer to master. I strive to send a first draft master by the morning following your scheduled mastering date. Once you've provided feedback, I can make any necessary revisions. If you have a specific deadline, please let me know in advance so I can accommodate your timeline.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, I can be booked anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks in advance. While I sometimes accommodate last-minute projects, please check my availability before submitting your music. You can book your mastering right here, and I will reach out to schedule a date for mastering.

What is your policy on revisions?

I offer an unlimited number of revisions of the master over the same mixdown. However, the limits of optimization are determined by the quality of the mix. If a revision is required due to changes made in the mix (not suggested by me), an additional fee may be charged.

How and when do I pay?

You do not pay until you are completely satisfied with the master. After you have approved the master, you can make the payment via bank transfer or PayPal. All the necessary information will be provided on the invoice sent to you via email after the mastering process. For larger projects, a deposit may be required to secure the booking.

Can I be present during the mastering session?

Unfortunately, attending the mastering session in person isn't possible. To ensure your song receives full attention, I prefer to focus entirely on the details of the music. However, I'm happy to schedule a call before and after the session to discuss any specific details or address any questions you might have.

What happens if I lose my master files?

Be sure to back up your masters in at least two separate locations. Sontale Mastering does not offer an archiving service, so it's your responsibility to securely store your masters.
